Free Play Outlines

Free Play is all about explaining the complex notion of creativity.
It begins with the parable. A young flute player who is challenged by a new instrument solves all the technical problems under the help of his teacher and plays it perfectly. But his teacher only comment, 'something lacking.' the teacher doesn't attempt to teach him anything because Zen Buddhism one of those things that can't be taught. In the end he realizes that the flute player must learn to play without fear of loss or promise of gain, must play freely.

The Sources
After an introduction by way of a mythic story that how one musician came to be a Master, this section continues to expand on what improvisation is and where it might come from, including the reasons why it's important. The author explores inspiration, the mind at play, the muse, and the dissolution of the self during acts of creation and the need to get out of our own way in order to let the art come through us. He covers archetypes like the Fool, the Trickster, the Child and the state of Samadhi. Although this part of the description is a little bit abstract, there were so many new ideas in it, and I learned so much.

Free Play book review

Improvisation used to be a mystery for me. I am willing to try it, but I didn't know where to start it. Free Play has explained the complex notion of creativity. I thought it was wonderful book which is very intensely packed with information. It clearly explains what creativity is and how to unlock the inner obstructions. After I finished reading it, improvisation was no longer a mystery to me. This book explains exactly how we are already improvising in our everyday life and if we examine how we do it, then we will be able to apply the principle to music.

In previous Dr. Gilbert’s EXPANDED MUSIC classes, we mainly focused on singing melody improvisation and body movements mimic improvisation. To be honest, I never tried this kind of exploration before I came to the United States. Instead of produce in brewing or doing carefully plan in advance, Improvisation is a creative act. Dr. Gilbert guided us to blend Improvisation produce and performance together. This was an amazing attempt. Improvisation we did on class was flexible, agile, natural and fluent. Because these characteristics were deeply loved by students and it is music easier to cultivate the students' interest, confidence, and benefit to the development of personality and thinking.http://expandedmusic.blogspot.com/
