Free Play Obstacles and Openings section
This section is about the ways in which the inherent creative impulse we have as children gets buried by living in the world, by criticism, by judgment, addictions (and not just to ingested substances but to ways of thought as well). This is balanced nicely with ways of overcoming some of these challenges, including surrender, patience, perseverance and other useful tactics. Nachmanovich stated in the introduction that one of the purposes of the book is to provide "a block-buster, a wedge for breaking apart creative blocks."

The Internet2 final performance
December 8th was my first time participating in a Telematic performance. It was an across time and space concert involved in three university. (Queen’s University Belfast; NYU Expanded Music; University of Tromsø) Queen’s University Belfast is located in Northern Ireland. University of Tromsø is seated in Norway. NYU is situated New York City. The concert was Impossible to complete when network technology was limited. It took a great challenge on long- distance location, which was hard to imagine in 15 years ago. After spent several hours to set up and dress rehearsal, the concert has started. My work was super easy, which was violin Improvisation with other Musicians and a little dance movement, which has practice on class several times. Musical improvisation comes from the idea of Jazz music. Play it by ear was the core idea. The Dance movement with Belfast and Tromso has realized the without image or voice delay communication. Far From Shores We Know concert has successfully concluded conducted by professor John Gilbert.
Tired but still happy day.
Shuyi, Jun and I arrived at Steinhardt theatre in the early morning. The students form Technology class lead by a professor Tom Beyer, one of our event Producers, has begun to set up recording device. After a little while, our professor John Gilbert has arrived. Under his leadership, our group's members work together. I was responsible to design our program with other two classmates. We carefully follow the template gave by our professor. We tried to transfer the file type firstly, then Jun collected information from a bunch of Email, at the same time, Ruoyao search the introduction of three schools. (Queen’s University Belfast; NYU Expanded Music; University of Tromsø)During the production process, whenever we met with difficulties, our professor Gilbert always came to help us nicely and patiently instead of complaining. I’ll never forget what he said: “see? You have already learnt something.” We were greatly touched by what he told us. I even wanted cry when we finished our program and putting up the posters on our college window at 8:30PM.

Macy's Thanksgiving parade 2013~
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual parade presented by the U.S. chain store business Macy's. The route beginning at 77th Street Central Park West and ending at Macy's Herald Square. It was totally classic American thing to do in the holiday. The balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade come in three varieties. In order to get a good viewing spot,I arrived before 6:30 a.m. the morning of the parade to stake out space along the parade route.I wore plenty of warm clothes and brought a bottle of hot ginger tea.
Although it was very windy and cold on that day, so many people crowd on the street. Many huge balloons floated in the sky, which was amazing. The balloons included spider man, Sonic, snoopy etc. My body was frozen stiff after two hours later. I felt so so tired but happy!
A meaningful Black Friday Day!

Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of November), often regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Instead of waiting on line for a long time to buying unnecessary stuffs, I talked the structure of upcoming concert with Professor Gilbert at Caffe Dante, one of the original coffee houses on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, where artists still hangout and discuss and create new work. This meeting was meaningful and exciting to me, because I have learned quite a lot when working with our Professor .

The second sections of free play review
The work section is the informative of this book. In my opinion, the exploration of the power of limits and mistake is the most valuable part. The most impressive point for me is the separation of practice and music-making. The author Nachmanovich inspired me to rethink about the notions of perfection and what does it really means? How it related to music making? In addition, Playing together talks about the group –improvisation. Music is an art of manifestation and timing, whose sound can express the spiritual and emotional changes inside human being.

Amateur -Lasse Gjertsen
Last week, one of my teacher shared an awesome cuts video with us. As a future music educator, it’s quite impressive. This creative video gave me a new idea that you don't need to be a skilled musician if you know how to edit. This is pretty amazing, ha?
I should really try and find a drum to learn it as well and record it!

A Feast of Street Art
Brooklyn graffiti arthttp://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/30/arts/design/graffiti-art-of-the-city-from-the-bronx-to-brooklyn.html?_r=0
Just off the 7 train in Long Island City, Queens, you'll find 5 Pointz, which is the center of the New York City street art scene. After gaining permission from the building owner in 2001, artists from around the world show off their incredible work. Some graffiti is created in less than 10 seconds, some pieces take weeks to finish. It spread out to almost every corner of the world.
5 Pointz, the Graffiti landmark of Queens, attracted lots of foreign travelers to come and promote the development of local economy. Although the graffiti has been rumored to be getting demolished and replaced with high-rise apartments, those are only rumors.

Unfortunately, 19th November 2013! Graffiti 5 Pointz has been erased overnight.
New York Graffiti Mecca 5 Pointz is now just a blank white wall.
Should we sacrifice cultural for the sake of modern social and economic development?
The answer is definitely “no”.
In the age of high-speed development in economic and culture, the contradiction between economic development and cultural heritage conservation is a worldwide problem.

When you feel that tension building in your neck or you find yourself grinding your teeth, stop and just smile~
Free Play Outlines
Free Play is all about explaining the complex notion of creativity.
It begins with the parable. A young flute player who is challenged by a new instrument solves all the technical problems under the help of his teacher and plays it perfectly. But his teacher only comment, 'something lacking.' the teacher doesn't attempt to teach him anything because Zen Buddhism one of those things that can't be taught. In the end he realizes that the flute player must learn to play without fear of loss or promise of gain, must play freely.
The Sources
After an introduction by way of a mythic story that how one musician came to be a Master, this section continues to expand on what improvisation is and where it might come from, including the reasons why it's important. The author explores inspiration, the mind at play, the muse, and the dissolution of the self during acts of creation and the need to get out of our own way in order to let the art come through us. He covers archetypes like the Fool, the Trickster, the Child and the state of Samadhi. Although this part of the description is a little bit abstract, there were so many new ideas in it, and I learned so much.

Free Play book review
Improvisation used to be a mystery for me.
I am willing to try it, but I didn't know where to start it. Free Play has explained
the complex notion of creativity. I thought it was wonderful book which is very
intensely packed with information. It clearly explains what creativity is and
how to unlock the inner obstructions. After I finished reading it, improvisation
was no longer a mystery to me. This book explains exactly how we are already
improvising in our everyday life and if we examine how we do it, then we will
be able to apply the principle to music.
In previous Dr. Gilbert’s EXPANDED MUSIC classes, we mainly focused on singing melody improvisation and body movements mimic improvisation. To be honest, I never tried this kind of exploration before I came to the United States. Instead of produce in brewing or doing carefully plan in advance, Improvisation is a creative act. Dr. Gilbert guided us to blend Improvisation produce and performance together. This was an amazing attempt. Improvisation we did on class was flexible, agile, natural and fluent. Because these characteristics were deeply loved by students and it is music easier to cultivate the students' interest, confidence, and benefit to the development of personality and thinking.http://expandedmusic.blogspot.com/

"Handal Passacaglia" it's amazing job!
Exploring different kinds of way to play
the instrument was one type expansion. Although it does not apply the
high-tech, the cello collaborated with violin very well! Melody was still quite
classic and impressive.
